My husband and I have always dreamt of creating a food forest. A vibrant garden interwoven with fruit trees, vegetables, herbs, and indigenous flowering plants.

Since moving onto our new  property four years ago, our dream has come to life. In just three years, we’ve turned a sterile lawn into a dynamic little jungle  it is today with birds, bees, insects, and frogs all thriving in the mix. The joy  of watching a garden evolve… the pleasure of eating something freshly picked…  the quiet satisfaction of living more sustainably and helping the planet in a  small way are the reasons we started our organic garden. There are many resources to guide one along the path to creating one's own sustainable food garden.

Don't fear the theory, enjoy the doing!

Nature and human interaction are a two-way relationship.
What you do in small ways;
Nature will respond with abundance.

Having traveled this path, we have learned a lot. These are my most important takeaways. It’s always best to focus on what thrives locally and don't be afraid to ask for help from your local nursery or even other more experienced gardeners.

Take time to just sit, just be, and observe.Nature will respond generously to even the smallest human effort. Spend a little time jotting down a simple sketch of your garden vision and what you’d love to grow.Notice where it's sunny or shady, and imagine bringing your food garden to life.

Start small but dream big!  Be curious, play, think more like a child, and have fun! Let it be a joy, not a chore!
