The Custodians of Rare and Endangered Wildflowers (CREW) programme is a citizen science initiative that involves members of the South African public in the surveying, monitoring and conservation of plants. Founded in 2003, as a collaboration between SANBI and the Botanical Society of South Africa, CREW operates in priority parts of the South African landscape.

The Outramps were recruited to CREW in 2004 on the understanding that they would be free to survey plants wherever they chose to wander. Since its inception, the Outramps CREW Group has been one of the most successful groups in the country. They were tasked with finding, monitoring and then posting the information on iNaturalist, so that it was available to SANBI for updating the Red list. Because of the huge work ethic of the Outramps the greater Southern Cape is one of the best surveyed areas in the country.

Most CREW groups have a character all their own. Outramps come from a mountaineering background. Fitness is a requirement and a good working knowledge of tech is required. Commitment to the weekly field trips, which are mostly on Friday and occasionally on Saturday is a prerequisite.

They have grown exponentially and big groups are not ideal when fossicking in the veld for Endangered plants, hence the decision to form nodes. The Knysna and Mossel Bay nodes is already fully active and a new CREW Group in Still Bay is planned.
The focus in 2023 will be to encourage more young people to get involved in conservation.
